How can I update my old VOD videos (links in Talon) to Panopto videos?

How can I update my old VOD videos (links in Talon) to Panopto videos?

Delete the old VOD links and create new Files in Talon that contain the Panopto videos.

Preparation

  1. First, migrate your VOD files to Panopto. For more info, see How can I move my videos in VOD into Panopto?

Add Panopto Videos to Talon

Use the insert stuff (aka "smart embed") method for adding Panopto videos to Talon. This way, students will automatically gain access to view the video. For more info, see How do I add a Panopto video to Talon for students to watch?

Notes
Note: Avoid the temptation to use the Upload/Create > Video or Audio option in Talon for Panopto videos. This option is great for YouTube videos, but will not work properly for Panopto.

vod links
If you previously had created link items in your Course Content modules for each separate VOD link in Talon, you can recreate this same design using Talon Files and embed the Panopto video into the file contents.
  1. Navigate to the module and click on Upload/Create > Create a File
  2. Add a title for the file (e.g. Video: Welcome to the Course)
  3. Click the Insert Stuff button on the editor toolbar and select Panopto
  4. Find the video you want to embed and select it. If you are not sure where your video is saved in Panopto, choose Everything from the folder dropdown and search for the title in the search box to the right.
  5. Click the Insert button and then click the second Insert button to confirm.
  6. Save and Close your file.

video links
If you maintain lists of links to VOD items within modules or item descriptions, or on Talon web pages, we recommend first creating separate web pages for your Panopto videos. Then you can remove your old links and add new Quicklinks to the new video web pages with your Panopto video.

Part I - Creating new video web pages
  1. Navigate to Course Admin > Manage Files
  2. Click the New File button
  3. Name the file - use a name you can find again later (e.g. "Chapter 1 Lecture Part 1")
  4. Click the Insert Stuff button on the editor toolbar and choose Panopto
  5. Find the video in your Panopto folders and select it. If you are not sure where your video is saved in Panopto, choose Everything from the folder dropdown and search for the title in the search box to the right.
  6. Click insert and then insert again to confirm
  7. Save and Close your new file.
Repeat this process for each video. You should have a new file for every video in Manage Files.

Part II - Linking to the new video web pages
  1. Return to Course Content where your list of videos is found
  2. If the link is still pointing to VOD, remove that link (see below for more removal details)
  3. Highlight the text you want to link to the new video file
  4. Click the QuickLink icon on the toolbar and choose Course Files (this will display all the files stored in Manage Files)
    quicklink icon
  5. Find the Talon file you create above in Part I, click on the file title to create a link to that file.
  6. Save and Close when done.
  1. Log into your course and find references to all your VOD links and remove them.
    1. For linked items in a module, use the action menu and select Delete Topic.
      Delete topic option in menu
    2. For links added to content descriptions or files in Talon, click the link in the editor and then click the Remove Link icon.
      remove link icon
