At the beginning of each term, faculty are required to
report student attendance to the college. Attendance reporting is a key step
related to financial aid processing as well as registration, deregistration,
and student census data. Attendance reporting involves identifying whether or
not the students have initially attended the course (H for attending and G for
not attending). Note that attendance reporting (as described here) is not
necessarily the same as an instructor’s choice to record daily attendance for
participation or grading purposes. In a face-to-face course, attending means
that the student has come to an in-person class. In a hybrid course, attending
means that the student has either come to an in-person class or has completed
something substantive in the TALON shell. In an online course, attending means
that the student has completed something substantive in the TALON shell.
In the past, several processes were in place for reporting
attendance. For face-to-face courses, faculty were required to go to EagleNet
and manually enter in H’s and G’s using the “Grading” link. For hybrid and
online courses, attendance was recorded automatically in EagleNet through the
use of an “attendance assignment” built with one of the four main interaction
tools in TALON (i.e., discussions, assignments, quizzes, surveys).
With the gradual retirement of the EagleNet system, the
process for reporting attendance is changing. Beginning in the Fall 2026 semester, attendance reporting will be done through the “Submit Grades &
Attendance” button found in the TALON shell for every course.
CHANGE TIMELINE:
Fall 2026 - Using the new Submit Grades & Attendance button is encouraged. Eaglenet is still available.
Spring 2027 - Using the Submit Grades & Attendance button is the only option.
Step by Step Guide
In order to access and use the attendance reporting tool,
follow these steps:
- Log into TALON.
- On the TALON homepage, click on the tile for the
course you wish to enter attendance.
- On the course homepage, click on the “Grades”
link found in the navigation bar.

- Locate and click on the “Submit Grades &
Attendance” button located near the top of the page.

- Clicking the “Submit Grades & Attendance”
button will redirect you to a page prompting you to enter your Kirkwood k-number
and password.

- After logging in to the system, you will see a
screen with three tabs: Attendance, Midterm Grades, and Final Grades. Click on
the Attendance tab.

- The page will refresh and you will see your
class roster with four columns: k-number, Student Name, Grade, and Update
Grade.

- In the Grade column, you will see either an H or
a G. If an H has been recorded for the student, the Update Grade column will be
grayed out. Once an H has been recorded, it cannot be changed to a G. If a G
has been recorded for the student, the Update Grade column will be functional,
and a dropdown menu will allow you to change a G to an H as appropriate.
- Once changes have been made, scroll to the
bottom of the screen, and click the “Next” button.
- A
confirmation page will appear where you can verify the changes. Click the
“Done” button to officially submit your attendance.
Additional Notes
- First, attendance will continue to be automatically updated
for hybrid and online courses. If a faculty member is teaching a hybrid or
online course, it is recommended to occasionally check the attendance tool to
verify that attendance is accurate.
- Second, face-to-face courses still require faculty members
to manually enter in attendance.
- Third, the attendance tool can be visited as often as
necessary to update attendance for students.
- Finally, it is important to remember that G’s can be changed
to H’s, but H’s should never be changed to G’s. If an error has occurred with
attendance reporting, faculty members should contact the Registrar’s Office (registrar@kirkwood.edu) to determine
the appropriate course of action.
