What is a 'Start Here' module? How do I create one?

When students log into a course for the first time, one question is on their minds: Where do I begin? Faculty can set the tone for success by providing a clear entry point that helps students get oriented, understand expectations, and engage with the class right away.

A well-designed 'Start Here' module does more than just organize information—it supports student success from day one by reducing confusion, answering common questions, and building momentum for learning.

Why a 'Start Here' Module Matters

Placing clear directions at the front of a course offers several benefits:
  1. Establishes expectations for communication
  2. Reduces student uncertainty and frustration
  3. Anticipates common first-week questions
  4. Encourages early engagement with content and activities
  5. Prompts connections between students and instructors
What to Include
While details vary by course, best practice suggests that a 'Start Here' module should include:

  1. Course schedule (weekly or semester view)
  2. Course description (what to expect, learning outcomes)
  3. Instructor welcome (video or written message)
  4. Course tour (brief orientation to the LMS structure)
  5. Attendance assignment (especially for online and hybrid courses)
  6. Technology set up (e.g., publisher platforms or required accounts)
  7. Syllabus
How to Build It in Talon
    1. Click the 'Course Content' tab in your course.
    2. In the 'Table of Contents,' type "Start Here: in the Add a module... field and press Enter/Return.
    3. To rename or edit, click the action arrow [V] next to the title and select 'Edit Properties in Place' from the dropdown menu.
    4. Position the module at the very top of the 'Table of Contents,' so it's the first thing students see. (Tutorial: "How can I rearrange modules in Talon?")
