Does Kirkwood have an official generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy?
In the spirit of academic freedom, Kirkwood Community College does not have an official generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy. Faculty are allowed to determine the acceptable uses, applications, and limits of Artificial Intelligence use in their courses.
However, in order to promote clear communication and transparency, all instructors must share their AI expectations via a course syllabus. Accordingly, a "Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy" category exists in all CourseLeaf syllabi (see screen capture below). This can be customized by each faculty member to best express their position on the academic uses of Artificial Intelligence.
Generative AI policy category found in all Kirkwood syllabi.
"
When Should College Students Use AI? They're Not Sure" reveals that 42% of learners enrolled at 2-year public institutions reported they are confused over the appropriate use of AI to complete their coursework - while only 28% of public 4-year students, and 21% of private 4-year students answered the same.
Accordingly, faculty are encouraged to provide detailed information in all syllabi about how learners can use AI, and to share those details in other course support materials as well. This is particularly important if an instructor does not allow AI or has conditions associated with its application. Exactly when and how can AI be used? What are the penalties associated with violations of class AI use policies?
